What does it even mean to “be present” anyways?
All my life people have told me to make sure I slow down, live in the moment, be present for each day, etc, but no one ever explained what that meant.
In my misguided child or teen mind, I thought they just meant like, no daydreaming, or put my phone down when im at a concert. Yknow, the classic “old man yells at cloud, phones are ruining the youth” stuff.
However as I’ve not only grown older but grappled more with body pain and casually worsening it due to a lack of intereoception, I’ve come to realize that what they meant was to be present in your body.
When you’re washing the dishes, whats your posture like? Are you leaning forward? Is 1 foot slightly off the ground? Are you holding the dishes in a way thats more strenuous than necessary, even if it’s not that noticeable?
Do you really workout, or do you just go through the motions?
When you’re with your loved ones, are you distracted?
Finally seeing this also made me better understand what people mean by “practicing mindfulness“ in reference to meditation. At least, the very popular type of “breathing into your muscles, being aware of every vein” meditation. On top of the emotional aspects more often talked about, mindfulness can also be the act of checking in with and finding synchronicity with your own muscles.
I’ve found that fighting my ADHD to sit down for a long meditation isn’t even necessary. Just taking a few conscious breaths and checking in with my body during idle moments can do a lot for my mindfulness. In fact, I find my mind wanders and distracts itself less because I have something to passively think about while washing dishes or folding laundry.
I really do have less time to worry about silly things now. Funny how that works.
