Half ass it

I think people now collectively struggle with an all or nothing mindset. There’s this belief in society lately that if you can’t do something well you may as well not do it at all, and while that is certainly true for some things, I think it’s perfectly fine to half ass the majority of things.

Take small web design for example, a lot of people simply don’t try to make their website accessible or responsive because they won’t be able to achieve a professional level of either of those, so why bother right?

Let me tell you why: I primarily browse the web from my phone, and a site that is half responsive is still leaps and bounds easier to use than one that is not responsive at all. It doesn’t matter if it’s janky, as long as it works better than it did before.

I was told this advice by my father in high school when I was skipping my homework. I was struggling with depression and didn’t have the energy to do much, and he knew this, but he also didn’t want me flunking out of my classes so he told me I don’t need to do it well, just do it at all. Turn in something, anything that my teachers could grade above a 0.

(I passed all my classes that year, barely.)

People should half ass things more often. Maybe we would all get more done.
